An Open Mind Is an Act of Faith
July 29, 2026
The second pillar of the Overcomers method — an open mind — is not intellectual neutrality. It is a form of surrender. It is the practice of releasing the grip on a conclusion before God has finished the sentence.
Recovery literature and biblical instruction share a word for this: willingness. The twelve-step tradition calls it the "open mind" of the third step. Phyllis built the second pillar of Be an Overcomer on exactly this principle, rooting it in the gospel imperative to become as a child — which is to say, genuinely receptive.
An open mind, practiced daily, shows up in small decisions: not arguing back when a cohort member offers a different interpretation, sitting with a passage for a second day before drawing a conclusion, asking "what if I'm wrong about this?" once a week as a discipline rather than a crisis.
The workbook exercise for this pillar asks you to identify one belief you hold that has never been questioned. Not to abandon it — to examine it. Bring the result to your next session or post it below.
